One correction: the genocide against the Rohingya happened in 2016–2017, not 2008.

Also, it looks like there’s a bipartisan effort to repeal Section 230, so who knows what content moderation might look like in the future for these big tech companies?

The internet as we know it might not be the same in the future—for better or worse.

The Trump administration will probably go though with it to shape the internet in their vision.

Great video!!! Yes, my favorite “conspiracy theory” is that things like social media and technology, while they can be helpful tools in some regards, are being used to undermine and deteriorate education, learning, and critical thinking so that ultimately, the masses are easier to control. Truly something out of a dystopian novel, which is freaky to think about how popular that genre was prior to social media becoming as deeply ingrained in our public conscience!

Also, new premium subscriber, and I couldn’t be more happy with this purchase already! Great work, Kim!!!

This isn’t too far fetched in terms of control! Media has long been used to control people. The ability to critically think is almost a superpower these days.

@10:17, While we have seen that decline since before COVID-19, what people are saying is that COVID has accelerated this decline. The brain damage that comes with mild repeated infections can not and should not be underestimated. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10063523/

Good commentary! I’ve always side-eyed Mark because he is a dangerous man with no moral compass whatsoever. He will transform himself into whatever he needs to be to protect his own interests. The way he “founded” Facebook was completely morally wrong and he has stayed on brand since then.

I knew Facebook was on some nonsense the minute they opened it up to people not in college.

Given the tech industry, I imagine Sarah’s base salary was around $700 - 800K without stock or bonus. Total comp was probably close to $1.2M - $1.4M and I’m probably lowballing considering that she stayed. She had to keep working to maintain her lifestyle.

“More speech is profitable speech“ I am enjoying this podcast episode on my walk. When you said this, so many lightbulbs went off in my brain. I’m currently taking an economic sociology course and ive been thinking about this idea. it’s interesting to see how we have somehow learned how to extract “value” from everything even our voice and ideas. thank you for your thoughts 🤍🤍

Yeah, the first third of that book felt like hot gossip and I was having fun. Then I started getting very distressed and thinking like “oh gosh aren’t these crimes? are they doing crimes? IS THIS TREASON?”
