Great break down! A take that makes the most sense to me. Would love to read more on why you believe self-objectification is not a thing. Have you written about that before?
I love how much nuance you have to this topic and how you tackled things from a marketing perspective because a lot of the discussions aren’t really in favor of what the cover means in that sense. Everyone’s more focused on speaking about what this means socially for women overall and not what this will mean for Sabrina’s career or how it will relate to the album.
Great analysis as always Kim! It’s insane how pop stars intentionally create spectacles, and ppl don’t get that. One of the major pillars of pop stardom is marketing and Sabrina (as well as her team) knows how to get in the headlines and sell those records!
This was so good I had to run over from the newsletter, create a substack and follow just to support! I hope you’re still working on that book, because your mind truly is a 💎 And damn you work hard (re: references/citations) !
Yeah, seems like people forget music industry and its stars love manufactured outrage to obtain publicity. I didn’t love when SC sang “singing on the BBC I want it in me,” and imo, if she didn’t do these gimmicks, I believe she would fade into obscurity since she can’t really sing or dance. She won’t be the first won’t be the last to try this either, that’s the music industry and celebrity for you.

You are BRILLIANT. It makes me emotional!
This is so sweet, Malique.

Sabrina knows exactly what she is doing!
Great read. Thank you!
Excellent analysis, being someone who is extremely lacking in the fashion knowledge department, I had to look up some of those clothing mentions.
